Sloth Watching Tour
Four to six wild sloths, a kilometre from town
Overview
Sloth Watching Trail is a protected 30-acre reserve a kilometre from downtown La Fortuna that exists for one reason: it is the most reliable place in the Arenal area to see wild sloths. The resident population is habituated to the trail but entirely free, and guides average four to six sightings per walk - both two-toed and three-toed. What sets it apart is the equipment. Every guide carries a high-powered spotting telescope and sets it up on each animal, so instead of squinting at a shape forty feet up you see the face, the claws and the slow blink. The trail itself is flat, wide and shaded, which makes it one of the few genuinely good wildlife tours for small children, grandparents and anyone who does not want to hike.
