Sarapiquí

Whitewater rivers, banana country, and dense lowland rainforest.

About Sarapiquí

Sarapiquí is Costa Rica's classic northern lowland rainforest — steamy, green, and threaded with brown rivers. It's a longtime favorite for whitewater rafting, birding, chocolate tours, and lodges built around biological research stations.

When to go

Rivers run big in the green season, ideal for rafting. December through April brings drier trails and easier birding.

Getting there

About 1.5 to 2 hours from San José over the Braulio Carrillo mountain pass.
