Tortuguero
Rainforest canals, sea turtle nesting beaches, and boat-only jungle villages.
About Tortuguero
Tortuguero is a roadless village on Costa Rica's northern Caribbean coast, reached only by boat or small plane. A maze of jungle canals replaces streets, and the long black-sand beach is one of the world's most important green sea turtle nesting sites.
When to go
Green turtle nesting peaks July through October. February through April is drier and better for wildlife spotting along the canals.
Getting there
About 4 hours from San José by road to the boat launch, then a 1 to 2 hour river boat into the village. Small plane options also available.
