January is one of the best months to be in La Fortuna. The rainy season has wound down, the trails have firmed up, and Arenal Volcano finally starts showing its full cone on clear mornings instead of hiding behind clouds all day. The rainforest is still lush and green from the wet months, the rivers run clear, and the hot springs feel perfect after a morning hike. It's also high season, so you'll share the hanging bridges and the waterfall with more people, and you'll pay more for hotels and rental cars than you would in May or September. The good news: with a little planning, you can dodge most of the crowds and still get those postcard volcano views. Here's what January in La Fortuna is really like, what it costs, and what to book first.
La Fortuna weather in January
La Fortuna sits on the Caribbean slope of the mountains, so it catches moisture from the trade winds even in dry season. In practice that means:
- Days: warm, about 26-29°C (79-84°F). Nights: comfortable, around 20°C (68°F).
- Rain: short showers, often 20-40 minutes, sometimes overnight. They rarely cancel anything.
- The volcano: most often out first thing in the morning. Clouds tend to build by late morning.
- Light: the sun sets around 5:30 PM, but it isn't properly dark until about 6-6:15 PM. Plan to finish hikes and waterfall swims by mid-afternoon.
If you want guaranteed all-day sun, the Pacific coast is drier. But for volcano, rainforest, wildlife and hot springs, January is one of the best months in La Fortuna.
Crowds and costs
January is high season all month. The first week is the peak. After about January 6, things ease slightly, but prices don't drop much.
Rough 2026-27 costs:
- Hotels: budget cabinas and hostels about $40-90/night; mid-range $120-220; resort and boutique stays $250-500+.
- Arenal Volcano National Park: just under US$20 per adult.
- La Fortuna Waterfall: $20 for foreign adults, kids under 8 free (2026 rate). About 530 steps down, and the climb back up takes longer.
- Hot springs: the free hot river costs nothing. Resort day passes run roughly $40-100+. We compare them in our hot springs guide.
- Rental car: the headline rate for a compact SUV is about $40-90/day in January, but mandatory liability insurance often doubles it. Read the rental fees nobody mentions before you book.
To beat the crowds, get to the waterfall and the national park at opening. The free hot-river spots get busy after 4 PM.
What to do in La Fortuna in January

Hike the volcano early. This is the month the early hike pays off most. The morning Arenal Volcano hike is timed for the clear window, and a guide will point out the old lava flows and wildlife you'd miss. If you're doing it yourself, go at opening.

What to book first
- Your hotel. Book 2-3 months out for January, more if your dates include the first week of the month.
- Your transport. Book a rental car (especially an automatic or 4x4) or a shuttle 2-3 months ahead.
- Must-do tours. A week or two ahead is usually fine. Book earlier if you only have a day or two in town.
Getting to La Fortuna

- From SJO (San José airport): about 2.5-3 hours by car, on paved roads through the mountains. Leave early to beat Central Valley traffic.
- From LIR (Liberia airport): about 2.5-3 hours, going via Upala or Bijagua or around Cañas and Tilarán.
- Shuttles: shared shuttles run from both airports, roughly $55-70 per person.

Once you're here, most things are 10-30 minutes from town.
What to pack
- Light, quick-dry clothes. Cotton stays damp in the humidity.
- A packable rain shell, because you'll use it.
- A light layer for evenings.
- Closed-toe shoes for trails, and sandals that can get wet.
- Sunscreen, a hat and bug spray (for dusk and night walks).
- A swimsuit (or two) for the waterfall and hot springs, plus a dry bag.
